Troys 2 day weekend in Broome

I recently travelled to Broome, giving me the opportunity to view and experience some of the local attractions.

On arrival to Broome Airport I collected my pre-arranged hire vehicle. There is also the option of the bus service or taxi's between the airport, Broome town centre and Cable Beach. As I arrived early in the morning I had almost 6 hours to wait for my hotel room to be available, so I started my day by taking a walk down Carnarvon Street, Johnny Chi Lane and dropping by the Broome Visitor Centre. The consultants at the Visitor Centre were most helpful, providing me with further information and their local knowledge of things for me to see and do. I headed straight for the Japanese Cemetery on my way to Cable Beach to reflect on the early days of pearl diving and saw over 900 grave sites. From the Cemetery it was another 5 minute drive to Cable Beach where I could see the famously blue water once again. I was disappointed that I couldn’t swim as there had been reports of Box Jellyfish and Stingers due to the time of the year so I took a walk along the beach instead.

After Cable Beach I visited Gantheaume Point, home of the 130 million year old dinosaur footprints. I was only able to see a mould of the footprints as the low tide wasn’t low enough! I was however able to soak up the atmosphere and take in the vibrant red sandstone cliffs and crystal blue water! From Gantheaume Point I returned to the Town Centre via Broome Port. I decided to check out the Court House Markets…… These are only open on a Saturday morning and well worth a visit! While taking another walk down Carnarvon Street, I had a look at the oldest operating outdoor picture gardens in the world and walked through Paspaley Plaza Shopping Centre.

After getting settled at my hotel and having a swim in the pool I went to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Farm for the afternoon feeding session… Having been to a few crocodile farms I had an idea what was in store… It still doesn’t take away the fact that I have a great fear of these animals!!! After the crocodile farm I headed back for another swim before organising myself some dinner while watching the famous sunset at Cable Beach! The following morning I had another walk along Cable Beach and a big breakfast at the beach side café to follow. From here I drove back to Gantheaume Point in hope that the tide was low enough to see the footprints… Once again I was out of luck!

I then headed to Town Beach and had a look at Roebuck Bay. On arriving at Town Beach I could see that the Sun Princess Cruise Ship was docked at the port for the day. I immediately drove back to the port and was amazed to see how big the ship really is... It is 261 metres in length and 15 stories high! Now I see why it only just made it under Sydney Harbour Bridge! From the port I had a very late lunch at Divers Tavern followed by another drive around town before heading back to the airport for my flight home. I was only in Broome for two days, but it made me realise how much I miss the tropics and the northwest lifestyle and wish I could have stayed longer to see more of the attractions in the area.
